Paul skipped two cities to get to Thessalonica. Amphipolis and Apollonia were sizable, but neither had a synagogue, and Paul needed an audience already grounded in the Scriptures. Thessalonica was the capital of Macedonia, a thriving port with a significant Jewish population. Paul chose it as a strategic hub, the kind of city where a gospel-planted church could send the message rippling outward for generations. He was deeply led by the Spirit and deeply strategic. Both. For three Sabbaths he did four things in the synagogue: reasoned, explained, proved, and proclaimed. His two central arguments were shocking to Jewish ears: the Messiah had to suffer, and the Messiah had to rise. The crown comes through the cross. Many were persuaded, including a sizable group of God-fearing Greeks and a number of leading women. In this episode, Paul builds a compelling case for Jesus from Scripture his audience already respected.
