No trial. No investigation. Just a mob, stripped clothes, and Roman rods breaking open the backs of two missionaries. Paul and Silas were thrown into the inner prison with their feet locked in stocks designed to maximize pain. And at midnight, they started singing. Not whimpering. Not cursing. Singing hymns loud enough that the other prisoners listened through the walls. People in chains were hearing songs about a God who breaks chains. Then an earthquake hit the jail with surgical precision. Every door flew open. Every chain came loose. The jailer woke, saw the open doors, assumed the worst, and drew his sword to take his own life. From the darkness, Paul called out, "Don't harm yourself. We're all here." Every prisoner could have walked. Nobody did.
