She followed them for days. A slave girl possessed by what Luke calls a "spirit of Python," the same mythical serpent that guarded the Oracle at Delphi. Her owners profited handsomely from her fortune-telling. She was enslaved three ways: to her masters, to a demonic spirit, and to a system that saw her as a revenue stream. And every day she trailed behind Paul's team shouting, "These men are slaves of the Most High God, proclaiming the way of salvation." Every word was technically true. But the endorsement was coming from the wrong source, and in a pagan city it muddied the gospel. Paul finally turned and cast the spirit out in Jesus' name. The girl was free. But her owners saw only a ruined business, dragged Paul and Silas into the marketplace, and wrapped their greed in patriotism. In this episode, the gospel collides with an economic system that profits from human bondage.
