The wind was with them. Two days across the Aegean, ten miles inland, and Paul and his team arrived in Philippi, a proud Roman colony where Latin was spoken and Roman law was enforced. There was no synagogue. So on the Sabbath, Paul went outside the city gate to the river and found a group of women gathered to pray. The Macedonian man from his vision turned out to be a circle of women by a stream. God has a sense of humor about our expectations. Among them was Lydia, a wealthy dealer in purple cloth, spiritually hungry and far from home. As Paul taught, the Lord opened her heart. She and her entire household were baptized on the spot, and she insisted the missionaries stay at her house. The first church in Europe was born in the living room of a businesswoman. In this episode, an opened heart becomes an open home.
