Born in 1932, adopted at six weeks, orphaned young, and working greasy-spoon kitchens by age 12, Dave dropped out at 15 because he refused to be a burden. He volunteered for the Korean War, ran mess halls feeding 2,000 soldiers, turned around failing KFC franchises for Brother Colonel Harland Sanders, then opened the first Wendy’s in Columbus, Ohio on November 15, 1969 — naming it after his daughter.

Square patties that hang over the bun. Fresh, never-frozen beef. Over 800 commercials where Dave himself promised “We do it right.” At 61 he earned his GED to show kids it’s never too late.

Initiated into Sol. D. Bayless Lodge No. 359 (Fort Wayne, IN) in April 1959 and raised just weeks later, Dave didn’t just wear the ring — he lived the obligation. Hard work as a creed. The square for honest dealing. Relief turned personal pain into the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, still placing thousands of kids into forever homes today.
