From surviving childhood trauma in New Orleans to battling homelessness and a severe crack cocaine addiction, Justo’s life was a progressive downward spiral. In this raw and deeply inspiring interview, he shares how a string of sports injuries led to prescription opioid abuse, a life on the streets, and the definitive moment of surrender that transformed him into a community leader. What causes a young athlete to transition from breaking sports records to surviving an overdose and fighting for his life? In this episode, Justo opens up about growing up in an unstable household overshadowed by parental substance abuse and alcoholism. He discusses how he channeled his built-up anger into football and wrestling, only to have his athletic dreams shattered by a severe spinal fracture and a dislocated elbow. Left with physical pain and a broken childhood, he was introduced to prescription opioids like Percocet, which triggered a severe downward spiral into marijuana, heroin, and crack cocaine dependency.Justo walks us through the dark realities of the street lifestyle—from running scams to maintain his habit and narrowly escaping severe legal consequences after a chaotic hit-and-run crash at the Chief of Police’s house, to eventually living in abandoned trap houses. After hit-and-run incidents, multiple probation violations, and months spent in the Portsmouth City Jail "dungeon," Justo hit a breaking point. Through a powerful spiritual awakening, family support, and the Oaks Recovery Center program in South Carolina, he found a profound faith in God and turned his life around. Now a certified Peer Support Specialist, Justo uses his lived experience with addiction to offer hope and guidance to others fighting their own battles with substance abuse.💬 What part of Justo's powerful story resonated with you the most?
