2 Kings 21–25 | 2 Chronicles 33–36 (Jeremiah, Zephaniah – prophetic context intensifies) The Fall of Judah and the Reality of Judgment
OVERVIEWThe narrative reaches a devastating turning point. What was warned through generations of prophets now unfolds in full reality.
Judah, the southern kingdom, follows the same path as Israel—rebellion, idolatry, and covenant violation. Kings rise and fall, but the overall trajectory does not change. Occasional reforms cannot reverse deeply rooted disobedience.
Manasseh’s reign marks one of the darkest spiritual periods in Judah’s history. Idolatry becomes institutionalized. Innocent blood is shed. The temple itself is defiled.
Though Josiah later initiates one of the greatest reforms in Israel’s history, restoring the Book of the Law and renewing covenant worship, the nation’s heart does not fully return to God.
Prophets such as Jeremiah and Zephaniah continue to warn:
Judgment is no longer avoidable.
Babylon rises as the instrument of God’s discipline. Jerusalem is besieged, the temple is destroyed, and the people are taken into exile.
