Thanksgiving and praise share a lot of similarities but there are also important and significant differences. Thanksgiving is frequently seen throughout the psalms and serve an important purpose of looking back to what God has done for us.

The word "imprecatory" is used to describe a genre of Psalms in which the writers call for God's wrath, justice or diving judgment to be brought down on a perceived enemy or wicked person(s). At times, these kinds of psalms can seemingly be in conflict with the teaching that we are to love and pray for our enemies. But God doesn't rebuke those who come to Him with these types of prayers. And their presence in the book of Psalms challenges us to consider their place in our prayer lives today.

There are so many psalms of praise to choose from! And even ones that don't traditionally fit into that category contain elements of praise. Today, we're narrowing it down to just the 103rd Psalm; a fairly non-descript and generic psalm of David. But one that brings the praise from beginning to end and sets a wonderful example for us of what it looks to praise God!

This month we will spend our time in the book of Psalms. Each week we will pick a specific genre, then a specific Psalm from that genre and discuss and study from it. This week the Messianic Psalms and specifically Psalm 22. In this Psalm David writes of his own struggles and it is easy to see the parallels to Jesus. Jesus quotes from this Psalm from the cross, noting the fulfillment of what we see in there.

We're finishing up the month in the last of the single chapter books of the New Testament - Jude. This brief letter addresses the danger of influential people who are abusing God's grace by using it as a license to live however they choose. Jude not only condemns such behavior, he also warns christians to deal with these false teachers quickly and strongly in order to protect the Lord's body.

As we continue our study of the one chapter books in the New Testament, we spend this week in 3 John. This is another personal letter written by John to a friend of his, with encouragement and admonition to help and support those who speak the truth. It has great application for us today in those same areas, who to emulate and who not to as well. Join us as we study this great book together.

The letter entitled 2nd John carries a very personal tone as "the Elder" writes to a woman that he clearly knows quite well and thinks highly of. He is concerned with the potential influence of those who are opposed to the truth and love that defines a christian.

We are going to spend some time this month studying the shortest books of the New Testament - the four one-chapter letters of Philemon, 2 John, 3 John and Jude.

This week is all about Philemon; a short, personal letter, written by Paul to a dear friend of his named Philemon. The letter addresses what could be a sensitive topic between the two of them but Paul respects and trusts Philemon enough to be confident that it will be well-received.
