• Conversations With Chad - Episode 16: Spice 1
    2024/09/23

Hayward, California legend Spice 1 offered listeners a glimpse into his storied career and creative process while appearing on the Conversations With Chad podcast.

Spice 1’s new album, Platinum OG 2, was released through Elder Entertainment. It is an 18-track project with an impressive roster of collaborators, including golden age icon CL Smooth, Griselda RecordsConway the Machine, fellow Bay Area legend B-Legit, and lyrical powerhouse Kxng Crooked.

During the podcast, Spice 1 delved into the intricacies of crafting Platinum OG 2, offering insights into his songwriting approach and recording techniques.

The conversation took a nostalgic turn as Spice 1 reflected on his deep-rooted connection with the late Tupac Shakur. Their collaborations, born from a shared creative vision and mutual respect, produced several memorable tracks that have stood the test of time. Songs like “Jealous Got Me Strapped,” produced by Blackjack and featured on Spice 1’s 1994 album Amerikkka’s Nightmare, showcased the chemistry between these two influential artists. Spice 1 discussed other collaborations with 2Pac, including “Can’t Turn Back,” “I’m Losin’ It,” “One Day At A Time,” and “Fame,” which further cemented their artistic bond and left an indelible mark on hip-hop history.

Spice 1 also spoke about his collaboration with Ant Banks on “Face Of A Desperate Man,” a track that exemplifies the gritty, funk-infused sound that defined much of Bay Area hip-hop in the ’90s. In 1994, Spice 1 created Amerikkka’s Nightmare with a dream team of producers, including Ant Banks, Blackjack, and DJ Battlecat, resulting in an album many consider a genre classic.

The rapper also touched on his contribution to the soundtrack of the groundbreaking 1993 film Menace II Society. Working with producer E-A-Ski, Spice 1 created the lead single “Nigga Gots No Heart,” a track that captured the raw energy and social commentary of both the film and the era.
