• Three Surprising Ways to Recover from Compassion Fatigue When Burnout Won’t Budge
    2026/03/03

    Send us your thoughts!

Chronic caregiving is literally disrupting your creativity, your problem-solving ability, and your working memory—and the brain fog you’re experiencing isn’t aging, it’s occupational injury.

If you’re walking into rooms and forgetting why, rereading the same paragraph three times, struggling to think clearly in session, or privately fearing something is wrong with your mind, this episode names what’s really happening.

In this episode, Dr. Julie explains the hidden cognitive cost of compassion fatigue and why chronic psychosocial stress overwhelms the brain.

You’ll learn what the research shows: burnout and compassion fatigue leave a mark on the brain and the body, and chronic stress can overwhelm cognitive skills and neuroendocrine systems. Dr. Julie breaks down what that actually means in real life—why thinking feels exhausting, why you can’t problem-solve like you used to, and why your working memory is failing you.

This episode also explains why the brain fog gets worse over time: your nervous system repeatedly enters a survival response when exposed to traumatic material, your body dumps stress hormones you must metabolize, and your brain tries to function while perceiving constant threat. Clarity and creativity do not thrive in threat physiology.

This episode also reveals where cognitive depletion lives energetically in the body.

Dr. Julie teaches how burnout closes the Third Eye chakra—your Anja—your energy center of insight, intuition, intellect, perception, and clarity. When it becomes underactive, you may experience confusion, headaches, moodiness, reclusiveness, and an exhausting inability to think deeply about anything.

You’ll be guided through an Inner Child practice from Week Nine of In Pursuit of Soul Joy designed to reopen your Third Eye chakra and restore clarity, intuition, and cognitive function. This episode helps you stop blaming your age, stop fearing dementia, and start understanding brain fog as information—something your nervous system and energy system are trying to communicate.

If this episode named your experience, the next step is deeper work.

  • A Surprising Solution to Decision Fatigue and Burnout Prevention
    2026/02/24

    Send us your thoughts!

You are making more than 35,000 decisions a day as a clinician—and every single one is draining your Solar Plexus until you are so depleted you can’t even decide what to eat for dinner.

If you’ve tried every productivity hack, planner, and time-management system and you are still exhausted, this episode explains why the problem was never your time.

In this episode, Dr. Julie dismantles the time-management lie that keeps women healers blaming themselves for burnout.

You’ll learn why burnout is not caused by poor organization or lack of discipline, but by an impossible workload that demands more time and resources than any human nervous system can sustainably give. Dr. Julie explains how decision fatigue—not laziness—paralyzes you after long clinical days, leaving you able to make life-and-death decisions at work but unable to make simple choices at home.

Drawing from In Pursuit of Soul Joy, this episode names the brutal loop that keeps you stuck: telling yourself you’ll rest, set boundaries, or reclaim your life “tomorrow”—while tomorrow never comes.

This episode reveals where decision fatigue actually lives in your body.

Dr. Julie explains how burnout depletes the Solar Plexus chakra—your Manipura—your energy center of willpower, self-esteem, inner strength, and personal power. When this chakra becomes underactive, you experience indecisiveness, exhaustion, low self-worth, digestive issues, and the inability to assert boundaries.

You’ll be introduced to the Power Matrix, a visual decision-making tool from Week Six of In Pursuit of Soul Joy that helps you delegate, delete, and reclaim your energy without adding one more thing to your to-do list. You’ll also learn a restorative practice designed to help you begin rebuilding your depleted power center.

This episode gives you language for why no planner has ever fixed your burnout—and a path toward restoring your power instead of forcing more productivity.

  • How Holding Space for trauma in your job is killing your nervous system from the inside out
    2026/02/17

    Send us your thoughts!

Your training taught you how to hold space for trauma—but nobody told you that your body is storing every trauma story you’ve ever heard.

If you are exhausted, numb, wired, sick more often than you used to be, or quietly wondering how your calling started costing you your health, this episode explains the biological truth behind compassion fatigue.

In this episode, Dr. Julie breaks down the hidden neurobiology your training never taught you.

You’ll learn why your brain cannot distinguish between witnessing trauma and experiencing it, and how your polyvagal nervous system responds by dumping stress hormones into your body every time you listen to another traumatic story. Over years of clinical work, this creates PTSD-like symptoms—not because you are weak, but because human neurobiology is doing exactly what it evolved to do.

Dr. Julie explains how chronic exposure to trauma overwhelms your nervous system, disrupts your hormones, impairs memory and focus, weakens immunity, and erodes joy. This is not a personal failure. Burnout and compassion fatigue are occupational hazards that quietly devastate the mind, body, and soul—especially for women over 50, when estrogen decline removes a key stress buffer.

This episode also reveals where compassion fatigue lives in the body.

Dr. Julie explains how burnout embeds itself in the root chakra—the Muladhara—your energy center of safety, security, survival, self-worth, and money. When this foundation is compromised, you feel unsafe, disconnected, financially trapped, unable to set boundaries, and unsure of your own value.

You’ll be guided through a body scan practice from Week Three of In Pursuit of Soul Joy to help you locate where compassion fatigue is stored in your body, followed by a processing tool that helps you understand the thoughts and patterns connected to those sensations.

This episode gives you language for what you’ve been feeling—and practical tools to move from awareness toward healing.

Stop trying to "Self-Care" your way out of a physiological crisis.

  • Three Reasons Empathy is Destroying Your Nervous System with Burnout and Compassion Fatigue
    2026/02/13

    Send us your thoughts!

The same empathy that makes you extraordinary at your job is literally rewiring your brain—and your body cannot tell the difference between their trauma and yours anymore.

If you are emotionally exhausted, physically depleted, numb, resentful, or quietly wondering how the work you once loved started costing you everything, this episode names the real reason why.

In this episode, Dr. Julie explains the biological reality no one taught you in graduate school: your brain cannot distinguish between witnessing trauma and experiencing it. When you listen to trauma all day, your amygdala fires as if the danger is happening to you. Your polyvagal nervous system shifts into survival mode, flooding your body with stress hormones that must be metabolized.

As written in In Pursuit of Soul Joy, your brain “can’t discern between your trauma and your client’s trauma. Your body’s response is the same.” Over time, this becomes cumulative biological injury—not weakness, not failure, but an occupational hazard built into the helping professions.

For women over 50, this impact intensifies. Estrogen plays a key role in stress resilience. As it declines, the same workload becomes biologically harder to carry. What once felt manageable now feels unbearable, not because you are failing—but because your nervous system is overwhelmed.

This episode also explores how compassion fatigue depletes the Heart Chakra, turning empathy into a one-way valve. Energy flows out to everyone else—clients, patients, students, families—while nothing flows back in.

Dr. Julie explains how an underactive Heart Chakra leads to emotional numbness, resentment, detachment, and the quiet grief of losing yourself in the work. She names the physical symptoms many women healers experience but rarely connect to compassion fatigue: chest tightness, shallow breathing, heart palpitations, upper back pain, and chronic exhaustion.

You’ll also be introduced to the Power Matrix, a practical decision-making tool from In Pursuit of Soul Joy that helps you reclaim time, energy, and agency without adding one more thing to your plate. This tool addresses the decision paralysis that keeps high-functioning helpers stuck in burnout limbo.

This episode gives language to what you’ve been feeling—and a framework for understanding why empathy, without boundaries and nervous system regulation, becomes a biological liability.

This podcast is for women healers over 50 navigating burnout and compassion fatigue who want nervous-system-informed insight into exhaustion, purpose loss, polyvagal regulation, chakra healing, and embodied recovery so they can move from survival into clarity, stability, and restoration.

  • Why Your Nervous System Never Leaves Work and Erodes Your Purpose
    2026/02/10

    Send us your thoughts!

Your body clocks out of work, but your nervous system never does—and that’s why rest doesn’t work anymore.

If you are exhausted but wired, unable to sleep, overwhelmed by silence, or finding that “time off” does nothing, this episode explains the neuroscience of why your body stays on call after the shift ends.

For professional helpers, work is not something you simply do. Over time, work becomes something your nervous system becomes. Your body does not experience work as a job—it experiences it as responsibility, relational threat, and survival.

As I wrote in In Pursuit of Soul Joy:
“Burnout and compassion fatigue create a state of re-experiencing negative events, increased arousal, avoidance symptoms, and flat-out exhaustion. The crazy thing about all this is that your brain can’t discern between your trauma and your client’s trauma. Your body’s response is the same.” (p. 11)

According to polyvagal theory, your nervous system organizes around perceived safety, not time. So even when the shift ends, the threat does not—and your body does not stand down. This is why you’re exhausted but can’t sleep, why silence feels unsafe, and why relaxing feels impossible.

And after 50, this gets more intense. As estrogen declines, the nervous system loses one of its natural buffers. Stress becomes stickier. Recovery takes longer. Functioning is not the same thing as being regulated.

Western psychology explains what is happening. Chakra psychology explains where it’s happening.

For women in helping professions, chronic work stress most often embeds in:
Root chakra — safety, survival, hypervigilance
Solar plexus — worth, decision fatigue, over-responsibility
Heart chakra — emotional labor, absorbed grief, compassion fatigue

As I state in the book:
“The person of the clinician cannot be separated from the work you do. A lack of self-care impacts you personally and professionally.” (In Pursuit of Soul Joy, p. 23)

This episode gives you language for why your nervous system won’t disengage—and a neuro-somatic practice that starts teaching your body how to actually come home.

  • The Neuroscience of Exhaustion and Compassion Fatigue: How Your Brain Mirrors Trauma
    2026/02/06

    Send us your thoughts!

Your nervous system triggers the same survival response when you listen to your patient’s trauma as it would if you were the one in danger.
After years of clinical work, your brain no longer distinguishes whose trauma it’s carrying.

    That’s not emotional weakness.
    That’s neuroscience.

In this episode, I unpack what no one explains in training: how mirror neurons, polyvagal activation, and chronic exposure to distress biologically wire women healers for exhaustion, burnout, and compassion fatigue over time.

We look at what happens when trauma is mirrored repeatedly without discharge—and why your body stays on high alert long after the session ends.

    You’ll understand:

    • Why chronic hypervigilance becomes your baseline
    • How decision fatigue drains personal power and clarity
    • Why exhaustion shows up as brain fog, resentment, sleep disruption, and loss of self

This episode reframes exhaustion not as failure, but as accurate nervous system feedback.

This conversation introduces a practical, embodied lens for understanding exhaustion—one that replaces self-blame with physiological clarity and opens the door to restoration without adding more effort or self-improvement demands.

  • When Burnout Erodes Purpose: How Compassion Fatigue Makes You Ghost the People You Love Most
    2026/02/02

    Send us your thoughts!

You’re so good at showing up for everyone else that you’ve quietly disappeared at home—and the people you love most are starting to feel the distance.

If burnout and compassion fatigue have left you emotionally flat, irritable, withdrawn, or numb in your relationships, this episode names what’s actually happening beneath the surface—without blaming you, shaming you, or asking you to “try harder.”

Women healers over 50 don’t lose connection because they stop caring.
They lose connection because chronic burnout exhausts the nervous system’s capacity for relationship.

After years of emotional labor, trauma exposure, and self-neglect, many high-achieving helpers find themselves overwhelmed, resentful, and quietly disconnected at home—not because they lack love, but because their bodies are still operating in survival mode.

When the nervous system is depleted, presence becomes impossible. Intimacy feels like effort. Conversation feels draining. Withdrawal becomes protection.

This episode explains why that pattern makes sense—and how to interrupt it without sacrificing yourself further.

In this episode, Julie Merriman, Ph.D., LPC-S explores:

    • Why compassion fatigue drains relational capacity long before it shows up as open conflict
    • How burnout creates emotional withdrawal, irritability, and “ghosting” in close relationships
    • The neuroscience behind dissociation, nervous-system depletion, and loss of connection
    • Why resentment in relationships is information, not failure
    • How unfinished stress cycles keep you trapped in exhaustion and disconnection
    • Three somatic practices that support relational repair without self-abandonment
    • How heart-centered, body-based work restores connection without re-depleting yourself

This episode is for women who feel confused by their own withdrawal—and want real tools, not platitudes, to reclaim connection, clarity, and purpose.

If this episode described your inner world, don’t ignore that recognition.

Read In Pursuit of Soul Joy: A 12-Week Guide for Overcoming Burnout and Compassion Fatigue. The book walks you through nervous-system-informed recovery, embodied practices, and sustainable repair—for both your energy and your relationships.
