This interview is with Tom Provost and Diederik Hoogstraten, the screenwriters behind ‘Young Washington.’ The film is currently in theatres and it follows George Washington during his early years, as he strives to join the military. Without formal schooling, the character is at a disadvantage, having to prove himself worthy of representing the British Crown. ‘Young Washington’ also explores the founding father’s coming-of-age story, focusing on a time of his life where he was still toeing the line between ambition and strong leadership.
In this conversation with Tom and Diederik, you’ll learn more about how they tried as much as possible to make the script historically accurate, in what ways they sought to further the supporting characters that were formative figures in George Washington’s life, and what it was like to craft the epic battle sequence at the beginning and the end of the film.
