Recent robotic inspections of the Hywind Scotland Pilot Park have revealed that floating wind turbines are serving as thriving artificial reefs. By exploring the submerged steel structures of five massive turbines, a submersible identified 121 unique species, including anemones, crustaceans, and rare corals. These findings suggest that offshore energy infrastructure provides a protected habitat for marine life by physically preventing destructive practices like bottom trawling. However, the accumulation of biological growth also presents engineering challenges, such as increased weight on the mooring lines and anchors. This research offers vital baseline data for scientists and developers to better understand how expanding renewable energy projects impact oceanic biodiversity. Ultimately, the study highlights the complex relationship between technological expansion and the unintentional creation of deep-sea sanctuaries.
