In 1998, researchers initiated a study off the coast of Miami Beach to evaluate how different construction materials influenced the effectiveness of artificial reefs. Over a three-year period, divers monitored twelve structures built from limestone boulders, concrete-gravel, and a concrete-tire aggregate to compare their impact on marine life. The findings revealed that all three materials supported similar levels of fish abundance, biomass, and species richness, regardless of the specific substance used. While the materials themselves did not create significant variations, the study confirmed that the artificial reefs successfully increased the local marine population compared to the original seabed. Ultimately, the data suggested that environmental factors and seasonal changes played a larger role in fish distribution than the reef's physical composition. This research highlights the viability of using diverse materials, including recycled tire chips, to create productive underwater habitats.
