Five minutes can change the way you lead all day, especially when the shift is this simple: clarity is an act of care. We talk about why some of the hardest conversations are also the most supportive, not because they feel good, but because they give people the truth they need to succeed. If you’ve ever watched someone “reverse engineer” expectations, or you’ve seen feedback show up too late in a performance review, you already know how expensive ambiguity can be.

We dig into research on the feedback environment and role ambiguity, and why clear expectations are tied to stronger performance, healthier leader-employee relationships, and lower burnout. When people don’t know where they stand, they spend energy interpreting every email, meeting, and facial expression. When standards are fuzzy, they waste effort guessing. When feedback is delayed, they keep practicing the very behaviors they’ll eventually be asked to change. That hidden drain adds up and it’s preventable.

We also unpack what makes feedback actually work: credibility, trust, and a real relationship. Care and accountability aren’t opposites. Care changes how accountability is delivered. There’s a difference between criticism and useful feedback, between high standards and low empathy, and between helping someone grow and making them feel small. We close with a question to carry into your day: is there someone you care about who knows less about where they stand than you do?

If this helped, subscribe, share it with a leader or teammate, and leave a review so more people can find the Morning Brief.
