In a show packed with the best film music slotted into a 2-hour show, your host Jason Drury begins with music from Alan Silvestri’s classic for BACK TO THE FUTURE (Intrada Records), which this year is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Jason then continues with music from recent Archive releases, including Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard’s GLADIATOR (La La Land Records), celebrating the score’s 25th anniversary; the belated 40th anniversary celebration of Jerry Goldsmith’s 1983 classic score for FIRST BLOOD (Intrada Records) and then selections from John Cameron for the 1980 Agatha Christie mystery movie THE MIRROR CRACK’D.

Jason then continues the show with music from Henry Mancini’s classic score from the classic 1983 mini-series THE THORN BIRDS, which has received a deluxe edition from Varese Sarabande Records, Basil Poledouris’ 1990 Australian Western score QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER (Intrada Records) as well as selections from Jerry Goldsmith’s 1972 TV movie thriller PURSUIT (Intrada Records), which is a re-recording from a recent Kickstarter campaign initiated by Producer and Orchestrator Leigh Phillips.

Jason then rounds off the show with music from the new 2-CD set of Michael Kamen’s classic score from the 1993 Disney adaptation of THE THREE MUSKETEERS (Intrada Records).

Welcome to Cinematic Sound Radio's celebration of the 35th anniversary of Film Score Monthly.

In 1990, a young film music fan named Lukas Kendall began what was to become Film Score Monthly with a Xeroxed newsletter sent to a handful of fans who signed up to receive the snail mail newsletter. From there, the newsletter turned into one of the biggest soundtrack publications in the world. The magazine's run ended in 2005 at 150 issues. It ceased printing due to budgetary reasons. The magazine, however, still lives on in the digital world as FSM On-Line.

A byproduct of the magazine was a record label, which began in 1998 with the release of Jerry Goldsmith's STAGECOACH / THE LONER. Lukas would go onto produce 250 FSM CDs, many of them long-sought-after "holy grails." The label would cease production in 2013.

The website and popular message board are still running, but are in desperate need of updating. That's where you come in.

Lukas is currently raising money on Kickstarter to help fund a brand-new website, message board, book, CD and more! As of the release of this episode on June 20th, 2025, the Kickstarter has reached its initial goal of $25,000 and is currently in its stretch run to raise an additional $25,000. Welcome to the first-ever FREE edition of the FRIDAY PLAYLIST.

Back in August of 2024, as a way to quickly produce some new content while I worked on the main podcast program, I came up with a weekly segment, exclusive to Patreon, called THE CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO FRIDAY PLAYLIST. Basically, this was to be a revival of my old school Film Music Mix programs, where I played a variety of unrelated cues with commentary.

Many of the FRIDAY PLAYLIST episodes feature a 7-10 minute opening commentary about what I was going to play, and then you could sit back and listen to an hour of uninterrupted film music curated by yours truly, as well as members of the Patreon. And in case I couldn't put on a show, other hosts of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO would step in for me.

It was so successful that I spent the vast majority of my podcasting time producing FRIDAY PLAYLIST and, unfortunately, neglecting the main feed. So, I decided to come up with a compromise.

Every month, I will attempt to produce two FRIDAY PLAYLIST shows (or other themed programs) a month for the main feed and two shows a month that will live behind the paywall. Those Patreon-exclusive playlists will feature far more interesting cues from hard-to-find scores and commercially unreleased music. That is followed by a concert suite of music from the 1980s Gerry Anderson ‘Supermacromation’ series TERRAHAWKS (Silva Screen Records) by Richard Harvey.

Jason then continues with the "Main Title" from the original 1963 film THE PINK PANTHER by Henry Mancini, released in a new 2-CD set by Quartet Records over Christmas 2024. Afterwards, you'll hear selections from Laurie Johnson’s swashbuckling score for THE LADY AND THE HIGHWAYMAN (Dragon Domain Records), ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN from the crowdfunded re-recording of Frank Skinner’s score from Intrada Records and a suite from the 1961 Disney family drama GREYFRIARS BOBBY from the album THE FILM MUSIC OF FRANCIS CHARGIN from Naxos Records.

Jason then rounds off the show with ‘The End’ from another recent release from Quartet Records, another 2-disc reissue, this time from the 1991 Martin Scorsese remake of CAPE FEAR by Bernard Herrmann, adapted, arranged and conducted by Elmer Bernstein.

For decades, the Italian, or Spaghetti Western, has entertained and thrilled cinema audiences all over the world. Its distinct style, as well as its inventive musical scores, has influenced and inspired actors, filmmakers, and composers. It is a genre that is still enjoyed today by many. This unusual but entertaining ensemble of films influenced not just the western film as we knew it, but also had a lasting effect on many other movies. Some of which were produced long after Italian westerns had ridden off into the proverbial sunset of cinema history.
