概要

Our guest on this edition of the Chatterbox Redux Podcast is Chaz Jankel, original member of The Blockheads

Originally released in 1988, Chaz Jankel’s score for the movie D.O.A. has been unavailable for 25 years. Now, after countless requests, it is here, reimagined, and remastered.

Chaz Jankel is an English musician and songwriter. In a career spanning more than 40 years, he came to prominence in the late 1970s as the guitarist and keyboardist of Ian Dury and the Blockheads. With Dury, Jankel co-wrote some of the band’s best-known songs including Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, Reasons to Be Cheerful Part 3 and Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick which featured at No.18 on the Greatest Ever British No.1’s in The Guardian.

He also wrote Ai No Corrida that became a big hit for the late Quincy Jones, and Glad To Know You, from his second solo album Chasanova, was a massive dance hit in the USA, staying at No.1 in the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for some 6 weeks.

Chaz has also written a number of film scores including An Unusual Job for a Woman, War Party, Killing Dad, K2, Rachel Papers and D.O.A. that his sister Annabel co-directed. His score for the Dury biopic Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll was nominated for a BAFTA.

D.O.A. was released in 1988 and the score was briefly available on Varese Sarabande on CD, but for the last 25 years one couldn’t find it anywhere. It was Chaz’s wife Elaine, who loved the original score, that suggested reimagining, remastering, and rereleasing the score. D.O.A. Reimagined is now available through Kudos Records and can be found online.

There are seven pieces on the album. Dead on Arrival Suite (Radio Edit) is the original orchestral score presented as a suite and Dead on Arrival (Piano Sonata) is a brand-new interpretation of the theme.

Other previous projects include a jazz quartet instrumental album called Out of the Blue (2001), a solo album with featured singers called The Submarine Has Surfaced (2011), and another solo album Flow (2023). There is a new instrumental album called Notes of Bergamot due to be released this spring which is a collaboration with acclaimed cellist Frank Schaeffer. In addition to this he has another jazz collaboration with saxophonist/flautist Finn Peters due for release later this year.

Meanwhile, Chaz continues to play throughout the country to enthusiastic Blockhead fans and has new material with the band ready to be released.
