A strategy can be crystal clear and still go nowhere if people don’t believe it. We’re taking five intentional minutes to look at the hidden failure point in organizational change: the gap between understanding the plan and trusting the organization can actually deliver it.

We dig into Perceptyx’s 2026 employee experience benchmark, built from more than 23 million responses across 490 organizations in 113 countries, and one finding that should make every leader pause: highly engaged employees are 1.9 times more likely to say change is handled effectively, yet only 55% of employees rate their organization’s change management favorably. We also unpack a striking optimism divide, with executives far more confident about the future than individual contributors, and why that difference shows up so consistently during transformations, reorganizations, and new strategy rollouts.

From there, we get practical and real about what people look for after the town hall. Do priorities actually change? Do leaders behave differently? Do departments stop optimizing for competing outcomes? Do measurements and incentives reinforce the new strategy or quietly reward the old one? Change is a time and energy cost, and people will only pay it when they have reasons for confidence. That’s why we argue alignment, not just communication, is the higher bar worth measuring.

If you’re leading change, ask two questions: do people understand where we’re going, and do they believe we can get there? Subscribe for more Time and Energy briefs, share this with a leader who needs it, and leave a review with what builds confidence where you work.
