A mile off the coast of Marseille stands the most visited prison cell in the world — and the man who made it famous never existed.

King François I built the Château d'If in the 1520s to guard France's greatest Mediterranean port. In four hundred years, it never fired a shot in anger. What carried its name around the world was a novel: Alexandre Dumas locked his wronged hero Edmond Dantès inside these walls in The Count of Monte Cristo — and ever since, travellers have crossed the water to stand in the cell of a man who was never born.

This is the true story the stone forgot — the Huguenots shipped from here to the galleys, the poor who died in the dark while the rich rented cells with a sea view, the young Mirabeau, the Commune leader Gaston Crémieux awaiting the firing squad, and the embalmed body of a general Napoleon would not allow a grave. A real prison the whole world visits — for a prisoner who never lived.
