Mary takes Dickon Sowerby into the locked garden where he shows Mary which ones are brown and living, instead of dead. Mary tells Dickon what she used to be like in India. Dickon is good with it and tells Mary that she can count him as a new friend.

Mary meets Mr. Craven. Mr. Craven is sad and careworn, but kind. He admits he forgot about her and asks what she needs. Mary boldly asks for a small piece of land to garden. Mr. Craven grants her wish to use any bit of earth she likes on the grounds. He doesn’t realize she means The Secret Garden.
