Carl Gustav Jung, the founder of analytical psychology, was 68 years old when he broke his foot and then suffered a massive heart attack. For weeks he hovered between life and death, and it was in that state that he experienced something he would describe in his autobiography, Memories, Dreams, Reflections, as more real than anything he had ever known.

He was about to enter the mystery itself when his doctor's image rose and came toward him, and Jung understood he was being sent back to the earth. He woke in his hospital bed, furious at being recalled.
Jung said the experience changed his understanding of reality forever. He lost all fear of death, and he wrote that death is not the end but a transition into a more intense form of existence.
