Carl Gustav Jung, the founder of analytical psychology, was 68 years old when he broke his foot and then suffered a massive heart attack. For weeks he hovered between life and death, and it was in that state that he experienced something he would describe in his autobiography, Memories, Dreams, Reflections, as more real than anything he had ever known.
This episode takes you inside Jung's near-death experience. He described floating high above the earth, looking down on the blue globe with India, Ceylon, and the snow-covered Himalayas spread below him. He felt a peace beyond all description, released from every burden. He was then drawn to a dark stone temple floating in space, where he saw his own doctor appearing in his primal, eternal form, and a black Hindu sitting in silent meditation. He felt that everything of importance in his life was being laid before him, and that he stood at the threshold of ultimate knowledge. He was about to enter the mystery itself when his doctor's image rose and came toward him, and Jung understood he was being sent back to the earth. He woke in his hospital bed, furious at being recalled.
Jung said the experience changed his understanding of reality forever. He lost all fear of death, and he wrote that death is not the end but a transition into a more intense form of existence. His visions shaped his late work on the unconscious, the archetypes, and the afterlife. Hear the testimony of the man who explored the depths of the human mind, and then explored what lies beyond it.
