    Join the Canonically Speaking host Fr Paul Hayward as he speaks with Fr Pius Collins, O.Praem.


    Fr Collins is a canon of the Canonry of Our Lady of Sorrows, Peckham in London. He was born in Nottingham and studied theology in Oxford, London, and Rome, as well as canon law at KU Leuven (Belgium).


    He joined the Norbertine Order in 2011 and was ordained to the priesthood in 2016. He has served in various roles since his ordination, including those of Vice-Chancellor of the Diocese of Brentwood, Chaplain of Anglia Ruskin University (Chelmsford Campus), and Editor of the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland.


    Currently he serves on tribunals in the UK, Norway, and the United States; he is also pursuing a doctorate in canon law, on the topic of the “divorce mentality”.

    Dr Gan is Professor of Interactive Media, Communications, and Fine Art at Franciscan University of Steubenville. An expert in digital media, technology, and communications, he has spent many years helping students, educators, and families understand the opportunities and challenges presented by new technologies.


    Drawing on his experience as an academic, artist, media producer, and author of Infinite Bandwidth: Encountering Christ in the Media, in this episode he offers an accessible introduction to artificial intelligence, explaining what AI is, and what it is not. The conversation explores the relationship between technology and human intelligence, the benefits and risks of AI, and the principles that should guide its ethical use.


    Although primarily prompted by questions of interest to canon lawyers, Dr Gan’s insights will be helpful for anyone seeking a clearer understanding of artificial intelligence and its impact on the individual person and on society as a whole.

  • Canonically Speaking with....Dr Pia Matthews

    Join Canonically Speaking host Fr Paul Hayward as he speaks with Dr Pia Matthews.


    Dr Matthews is a senior lecturer at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, and a member of the formation team at Allen Hall Seminary Chelsea. Her PhD doctorate explored the notion of the person in patristic theology and philosophy, applying insights from Trinitarian theology and Christology to contemporary issues concerning the person in bioethics. Her research interests include the vocation, contribution, and spirituality of people with disabilities and of people living with dementia.


    In 2015 Pope Francis appointed Pia as an expert to the XIV Ordinary General Assembly Synod of Bishops, on the Family.


    Pia has co-authored a book – along with Deacon Joseph Cortis, founder of Caritas Leeds, and former healthcare lecturer – entitled “Journeying Together: Accompanying People Living With Dementia” (2023, ISBN 0852316267), which is intended as a practical, spiritual, and ethical guide to supporting those with dementia.


    One of the topics the book deals with is the question of the administration of the sacraments to those suffering from dementia, which is the central theme of this podcast.

  • Canonically Speaking with....Canon Gerard Tartaglia

    Join Canonically Speaking host Fr Paul Hayward as he speaks with Canon Gerard Tartaglia.


    Canon Gerard Tartaglia, originally from Glasgow’s East End, was ordained in 1985 and has served in several parishes in the Archdiocese of Glasgow, moving to his current parish of Kirkintilloch in 2022.


    In 2008 he became a member of the Chapter of Canons of the Archdiocese. Since 1989 he has held roles in the Scottish National Tribunal (now known as the Scottish Catholic Inter-Diocesan Tribunal) and from 2014 he has also helped in the Tribunal of the Diocese of Oslo.


    He has been involved in numerous canon law teaching roles, and from 2007 to the present he has been the Director of the Sentence Writing and Jurisprudential Course of the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland. In 2025 he was elected President of that Society.

  • Canonically Speaking with....Sr Eleanor Campion

    Join Canonically Speaking host Fr Paul Hayward as he speaks with Sister Eleanor Campion.


    Sr. Campion OCSO, a native of Co. Waterford, entered St Mary’s Abbey, Glencairn – Ireland’s only community of Cistercian nuns – in 1984, where she completed her novitiate and made her first profession of monastic vows in 1987. She was solemnly professed in Glencairn in 1990. In 2017 she obtained a JCL at St Paul University in Ottawa, and today she serves at the Cistercian Generalate in Rome as a member of the Abbot’s General Council.

    Join Canonically Speaking host Fr Paul Hayward as he speaks with Dr Helen Costigane.


    Dr Costigane was born in Scotland, and studied History and Politics at the University of Glasgow.


    She later moved to London where she worked in marketing for 2 years, and went on to train as a chartered accountant. She subsequently obtained numerous academic titles, several of them at Heythrop College, University of London.


    In 2011 she obtained a Doctorate in Canon Law at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium.


    She is a member of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, and since 2017 has been a senior lecturer in the School of Theology at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, in SW London.


    She is a regular contributor to canonical and theological journals.


    As a canon lawyer, Dr Costigane provides advice to solicitors, dioceses, clergy, religious (individuals and congregations), and lay people on canonical issues such as temporal goods, rights and obligations in the Church, declarations of nullity of marriage, and penal processes.

    Join Canonically Speaking host Fr Paul Hayward as he speaks with Dr Philip Milligan.


    Dr Milligan comes from Scotland, where after studying law he went on to study philosophy and languages in Belgium and France, and then canon law at the Santa Croce Pontifical University, where in 2017 he completed a doctorate on international ecclesial movements and new communities.


    From 1997 to 2005 he coordinated the international office at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family (Rome); and from 2012 to 2016 he was head of the legal office at the Pontifical Council for the Laity.


    Since 2016 he has held the same post at the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, the department of the Roman Curia that exercises the Holy See’s competency for the lay apostolate and associations of the faithful.


    He is a member committed in celibacy of the Emmanuel Community, an international association of the faithful which brings together lay people (married, single, consecrated in celibacy) and priests, who live in the heart of the world and aim to serve the mission of the Catholic Church through adoration, compassion and evangelisation.

    Fr Brian Austin is a member of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter, exercising sacred orders in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, in the State of Georgia. He is a part-time professor at the Canon Law Faculty at Saint Paul University in Ottawa, and adjunct professor at the Emory University School of Law in Atlanta (in affiliation with the Center for the Study of Law and Religion). He holds degrees from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, Saint Paul University / University of Ottawa, and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium (JCD and PhD, Canon Law). As such, he is qualified to serve as an advocate or procurator before any diocesan or religious tribunal in the world, and before tribunals of the Roman Curia on a case-by-case basis. He is a specialist in penal and religious law, and his academic work focuses on questions of legality, due process, and the equal protection of rights. He has a long record of service to the Canon Law Society of America as well as to a number of other academic and professional societies, and he is a regular contributor to The Jurist, Roman Replies and Advisory Opinions, and Studia Canonica.
