He is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, director of the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute, and former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

His book, Can Scientists Succeed Where Politicians Fail?, examines the history, challenges, and promise of science diplomacy in addressing global threats.
