🧠 What if focusing on an itch could actually change what your immune system does? New research from Nature Human Behaviour suggests that voluntary attention may regulate acute inflammation—not just how intensely we experience it. In three preregistered experiments, researchers used a histamine skin-prick test to compare people who focused on sensations at the irritated site with those who were distracted. The result was striking: internal attention produced inflammatory responses roughly 1.5× smaller, with about 90% of participants showing the more regulated response. 🔬

Even more surprising, participants felt the itch more strongly when they paid attention, while their measurable swelling and redness were reduced. The researchers identify two possible pathways: sensory feedback and top-down regulation involving parasympathetic/vagal activity.

Could attention itself be a biological tool for regulating the immune system? And does distraction come with an unexpected physiological cost?

🎧 Explore the fascinating connection between attention, interoception, the vagus nerve, and inflammation.
