Even though it’s one of the most significant festivals on Earth, there’s never been a public celebration of Diwali on the Sunshine Coast. That is, until friends Sushma Dass and Sarah Dhillon got an idea to throw party.

Book exchanges have been around pretty much forever, but then in 2012 a movement was born. Now, hundreds of thousands of boxes filled with books are permanently affixed to people’s properties. Some love them, some cannot abide them. Some don’t get what the fuss is about. And from these premises was born an unironic investigation into a moral dilemma of questionable stakes: are little free libraries something we should be concerned about? And, why are they so popular, still?

It was a strange one: why would librarians put the shush on little libraries? Why are book exchanges even popular enough for librarians to have opinions about them? And so the journey began... Kidding! Sort of.

The Beachcombers aired on CBC Television from 1972 to 1990, making it arguably Canada’s longest running scripted television series, ever. (Degrassi is the other contender.)

For some reason only the gods understand, CBC hasn’t run an episode since Dec. 12, 1990.

In the inaugural episode of COASTERS, producer Sophie Woodrooffe looks at the show’s impact on a town that will forever be attached to The Beachcombers, whether it wants to be, or not.
