  • #042: The Moondog Coronation Ball - The Night Rock & Roll Was Born
    2026/07/25

On the evening of March 21, 1952, thousands of excited teenagers poured into downtown Cleveland with one goal in mind: to attend a concert unlike anything America had ever seen.

The event was called the Moondog Coronation Ball, and although it lasted only a few minutes before being shut down by police and the fire marshal, it would become one of the most important nights in music history.

Today, more than seventy years later, historians widely recognize the Moondog Coronation Ball as the world's first major rock and roll concert. It helped establish Cleveland as the birthplace of rock concerts and became one of the strongest reasons the city was later chosen as the home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Ironically, one of the shortest concerts in history became one of its most influential.

  • #041: Alan Freed the Cleveland DJ Who Helped Launch Rock & Roll
    2026/07/24

When people think about the birth of rock and roll, names like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Buddy Holly often come to mind. Yet behind the scenes was a Cleveland radio disc jockey whose influence forever changed American music. His name was Alan Freed, and without him, rock and roll may have taken a very different path.

Although historians continue to debate whether Alan Freed actually coined the phrase "rock and roll," there is little disagreement that he introduced the term to millions of listeners and helped transform rhythm and blues from a niche genre into a nationwide phenomenon.

His story is more than the biography of a radio personality. It is the story of a changing America, where music crossed racial boundaries, teenagers discovered a new identity, and Cleveland became forever linked to one of the most important cultural movements in history.
