  • Understanding Trauma: Hypervigilance, Arousal States, and the Window of Tolerance - Episode 3 Trauma Series
    2026/10/20

In this third episode of our five-part series on trauma, Jaime—EMDR and CBT therapist, clinical supervisor, and director of The Online Therapy Clinic—delves into how trauma impacts our nervous system and baseline state of alertness.

This episode explores the difference between normal vigilance and trauma-induced hypervigilance, breaking down how the mind and body adapt to prolonged stress and elevated cortisol levels. Jaime breaks down the Window of Tolerance, detailing the mechanisms behind:

    • Hyperarousal: The "stuck on" fight-or-flight state marked by panic, racing thoughts, and high anxiety.

    • Hypoarousal: The "stuck off" freeze state characterized by numbness, brain fog, and dissociation.

You will also learn practical grounding exercises designed to widen your window of tolerance and bring your nervous system back to the present moment, including the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory technique and a guided Colour Breathing exercise.
