  • We’re Shutting Down Our Podcast: The End of ‘Business in Between’
    2024/12/17

This week on Accidental Business Owners we talk about one of the hardest decisions we've made so far in business – which just happens to be shutting this channel down.

2024 has been such a massive year for Seamus, Di and I – and a few weeks ago we had a pretty intense end-of-year strategic advisory session.

It got pretty real, pretty fast – and what we all realized was that we'd taken on too much – and in order to create a sustainable future - needed to find ways of cutting back. Or as Di would say, we needed to go slow, to go fast.

This conversation is all about how, and why, we arrived at the decision to shut down our Business in Between channel.

It was recorded on a Saturday morning, at the tail end of the busiest week of our year – and there was a little bit of tension in the air. It was a real marker of a moment in time.

The good news is we're keeping the best bits of the channel – and this show Accidental Business Owners will live on over on our Between Two Beers channel.

For everyone that has joined us on this Business channel this year- thank you for all your support. We've loved the ride.

  • Chris Moorman: How I Won $42 Million Playing Poker
    2024/12/10

This is something a bit different. We're talking about the business of poker.

Our guest Chris Moorman is one of the most successful poker players of all time.

He has won over $42 million dollars playing cards and is widely considered to be the best online tournament player ever, but he's also crossed over successfully into live tournaments – winning over $1 million on three separate occasions.

At one point, Moorman was also one of the biggest 'backers' in the online poker scene, and tells the incredible story of how some amateur money-management and sloppy decision-making cost him around $3 million.

Chris is a poker legend; and in this one we hear all the most incredible stories from his 15 years as a poker pro - and how he turned his talent into a business.

This conversation was recorded in July of 2022, and first published on the Between Two Beers Podcast channel.

  • Chiefs Rugby CEO: Super Rugby is “Better Than Ever”, How to Stop Losing Local Talent & Think Globally
    2024/12/03

Welcome to Business in Between our podcast channel, that features long-form chats with some of NZ's most interesting business minds.

This week we hear from Simon Graafhuis who is the CEO of the Chiefs Rugby Club about the business of sport.

Before taking the top job, Simon was a Board Member at the Chiefs and spent 18 months as the Interim Chair.

All while he was also holding down the role of the Chief Financial Officer at Gallagher Group, where he had spent 14 years building his corporate knowledge after previous finance roles within the dairy industry.

Simon is also a small business owner with his start up craft beer operation Bootleg Brewery who were one of the first supporters of the Between Two Beers Podcast.

His thoughtful insights into the business of rugby make for interesting listening as the national sport fights to stay relevant in a congested entertainment market.

And he takes us behind the scenes of the Chiefs who are one of the few in New Zealand to weave Te Ao Māori concepts into the values and behaviours of the organisation. One that we were privileged to enter earlier this year to see firsthand.

    Enjoy.
