Broken Gavel™ and Susan Langford are more than just names—they represent a legacy born from truth, forged in the fires of corruption, and carried forward by courage. My story began in 1985, inside a Connecticut courtroom on April Fool’s Day. But what unfolded that day was no joke—it was a tragedy that shattered lives.
In that courtroom, corruption ruled. Unethical conduct by those sworn to uphold justice revealed the dark underbelly of a system designed to protect the innocent. Legal scholars who ignore the rule of law and the Model Rules of Professional Conduct have no place in our American justice system. I saw firsthand how corruption and greed can twist human nature, inflict pain, tear families apart, and bury truth deep in the pits of hell.
That day changed the direction of my life forever. It forced me to face a new reality—one that demanded I seek answers and fight back. I began investigating relentlessly, spending hours in courthouse law libraries and courtrooms across America. What started as a personal quest for truth became a lifelong mission: to help others understand that a broken gavel does not have to break your life. You can fight back. You can reclaim your voice. You can rise above the damage inflicted by unethical conduct and corruption.
For more than twenty-three years, I devoted my life to confronting the evil underbelly of society—helping victims heal and reclaim justice. I walked into the lion’s den time and again, standing alone against systems built to silence the powerless. Without any lawyer by my side, I fought—and I won. I stood up to the corrupt and brought justice back to those who had been stripped of it.
My work expanded to expose insurance fraud, challenge medical malpractice, and fight for the compensation victims deserved. I shared in their victories, their relief, and their joy when I saw smiles return to faces once marked by pain. I witnessed lives transformed. Some I even helped save.
In 2012, I published my first book, Bringing Down Goliath: Based on a True Story. In 2015, under my pen name S.A. Roberts, I wrote and registered Broken Gavel Inspired by a True Story, a screenplay inspired by the same true events. Later, in 2024, I registered a revised Broken Gavel: Inspired by a True Story, now an award winning screenplay at festivals and trade shows around the world -- in such places as Berlin Germany, London England, New York, California and elsewhere. On June 16, 2025, I registered my book, Broken Gavel A Legal Drama - Inspired by a True Story—chronicling this powerful journey.
While others have written works under similar titles—such as a book, Broken Gavel (2005) by Nicholas A. Clemente, now deceased, and A Broken Gavel (2023) by John Troy King—none have lived the story the way I have.
As of September 2025, I have yet to find another person who, without a law degree or legal representation, has single-handedly investigated, confronted, and triumphed over systemic corruption for more than two decades.
To my knowledge, no other non-lawyer has achieved such consistent success in pursuing justice on behalf of the injured and oppressed.
The book, the screenplay and the accompanying Broken Gavel™ Podcast Series chronicles the story which began that dreadful day in a Connecticut courtroom, on April 1, 1985, when April Fool’s Day - was no laughing matter. Together, they explore how I confronted “broken gavels” everywhere, beginning with my own.
So stay with me. Read. Allow this journey to open your eyes to why corruption and unethical conduct continue to thrive, and more importantly, what we the people can and must do about it. Corruption may be powerful, but truth endures.
