    Sermon: Table Manners

“For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”

    ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭11‬:‭23‬-‭26‬ ‭NIV‬‬

INTRODUCTION: It is important to pass faith to the next generation!

“For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you..."

    • 1 Corinthians 11:23a

    Three Table Manners:

    Remember Jesus' Sacrifice...

    -1 Corinthians 11:23b-24

    Rejoice in Relationship...

    -1 Corinthians 11:25

    Respond with Thankgiving...

“So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.”

    -‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭11‬:‭27‬-‭28‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Conclusion: As we gather at the Lord's Table this Thanksgiving season, let us be thankful!

    AT THE TABLE

    When Bread is Not Enough!

“Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.” Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

    -‭‭John‬ ‭6‬:‭32‬-‭35‬ ‭NIV‬‬

INTRODUCTION: Social work cannot be a substitute for spiritual transformation!

    Moses the Shadow...

Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, It is not Moses who has given you bread from heaven..."

    -John 6:32

    Jesus the Substance...

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

    -John 6:35

    Jesus = Life

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

    -‭‭John‬ ‭10‬:‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

CONCLUSION: Like Jesus, we must understand that physical bread is not enough.

“Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.””

    ‭‭-John‬ ‭6‬:‭26‬-‭27‬ ‭NIV‬‬

At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’ “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’ “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’ “ ‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’ “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.
