  • Female urinary retention
    2025/03/27

    In this episode, Dr. Lewis discusses the difference between acute urinary retention and chronic urinary retention.

    Guest bio: Dr. Jennifer Lewis graduated from the DNP program at the University of Oklahoma in 2015. She received her MSN and FNP from Graceland University in 2011. Since that time, she has been practicing as a Nurse Practitioner in the Department of Urology at OU Health. Dr. Lewis transitioned as faculty from OU College of Medicine to OU College of Nursing in 2023 where she is currently an Assistant Professor in the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. Before that, she worked as an RN in the PICU and the resident surgery specialty outpatient clinics. In 2022 she became a certified urologic nurse practitioner. In 2023, Dr. Lewis became a certified interprofessional educator. She presently serves as the research chairperson for SUNA (Society of Urologic Nurses & Associates) and with the AUA (American Urologic Association) on the APP education and membership committee. In 2024, she was selected as a Fellow of the Academy of Urologic Nurses Association. Most recently Dr. Lewis has returned to the student role, to obtain my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate with plans to carve a niche in the work of uropsychiatry for APPs.

    Amaka discusses her approach to managing peristomal skin and wound care for ostomy patients.

    Amaka Akinade is a board-certified Advance Practice Nurse, Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse. She graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, obtained her Master of Nursing as an adult clinical nurse specialist from the University of Washington in Seattle, and then pursued her post-master as a family nurse practitioner at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. She is pursuing her doctorate in nursing and practices as an outpatient wound ostomy nurse practitioner at a large accountable care organization. She serves as a leader and clinical resource for colleagues, and she also utilizes her expertise to promote the care of patients.

  • A focus on female anatomy

    Dr. Wiegand joins us today with a closer look into the female urethra and lower urinary tract when there is a clinical need for intermittent catheterization. Incomplete bladder emptying associated with urinary retention in females presents a unique set of challenges, teaching opportunities, and potential complications. Dr. Wiegand addresses each of these from an expert urologist’s perspective, providing explanations and solutions. He focuses on teaching the female population how to catheterize, providing tips for anyone working with females and needing to teach intermittent catheterization. Listen in as Dr. Wiegand addresses the importance of compliance for females and why the female urethra is not just a shorter version of the male urethra.

    Guest bio: Dr. Luke Wiegand is a board-certified urologist with Orlando Health Medical Group Urology specializing in reconstructive urology. Sought after for second opinions and complex case referrals, he strives to communicate honestly and directly with his patients to help put them at ease and achieve their goal of returning to their normal lives.

    Dr. Wiegand earned his medical degree and completed his urology residency at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa. He was chief resident in his final year. Dr. Wiegand performed his fellowship in reconstructive urology at Washington University in St. Louis, where he supervised residents in general urology and reconstructive urologic procedures. He serves as assistant editor of the Video Journal of Prosthetic Urology. He is the author of several medical textbook chapters and is a frequent contributor to peer-reviewed journals.

    Dr. Wiegand is board-certified by the American Board of Urology. His professional memberships include the American Urologic Association, Florida Urological Society, and the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons.
