'That Management Guy' Transforming Workplace Cultures, One Manager at a Time

I used to teach communication seminars across the country as part of the regular work I would do in organizational development. The seminar I taught had a section in it about how to communicate with a difficult team member. And invariably, almost every time I would get to this section, one or more people in the room would ask," What if the challenging person is my boss?" And in every instance, whenever this question was asked, the entire room would come alive wanting to share their experiences with one or more bad bosses.

Before these instances, I thought I was the only one who had bad luck with some past bosses. Clearly I was wrong. It seemed like everyone has experienced at least one bad manager. But should it be this way? It led me to think maybe I should look into this. Why are there so many bad bosses? But more importantly, what are the great managers doing, (or not doing) that elevates their work? I realized this is where my focus needed to be.

And so began my work in this area. For nearly 30 years I have researched the characteristics of great managers, worked as a manager, written about management insights, and now speak to audiences on this topic.

The culmination of these insights are contained in my latest book, Perfect Bossture: The Framework of Elite Managers. The book presents both a conceptual model for managers to work from, as well as a set of practical areas managers can focus on in their day to day work; efforts which will simplify their work as managers and, at the same time, elevate both their team's performance and their organization's productivity.
