For most of the nineteenth century the United States pushed steadily westward. Treaties were signed. Treaties were broken. By the 1870s the last independent peoples of the northern Plains still lived free on land the government now wanted. Jim Rand tells the story of the broken Treaty of Fort Laramie, the discovery of gold in the Black Hills, and the day in June 1876 when the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and their allies stood and defeated five companies of the 7th Cavalry at the Little Bighorn.
