On August 4, 1944, German police raided 263 Prinsengracht and arrested all eight people hidden inside the Secret Annex. Anne Frank was fifteen years old. But the diary survived too. Miep Gies gathered Anne's pages from the raided Annex floor and kept them safe without reading them — an act of extraordinary restraint and loyalty. When Otto returned from Auschwitz and learned his daughters were dead, Miep placed the diary in his hands. He read it, and he recognized that it had to be shared.
The book was first published in Dutch in 1947 as Het Achterhuis — The Secret Annex. It has since been translated into more than seventy languages and sold over thirty million copies. The girl who wrote 'In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart' had, against every odd, found her reader.
This is the final chapter of Anne Frank's story — and the beginning of her legacy.
