概要

The Bengals addressed two major defensive needs on the opening day of the NFL’s free-agency negotiating period, agreeing to deals with safety Bryan Cook and edge rusher Boye Mafe. Cook, a Mount Healthy High School graduate and former University of Cincinnati standout, started 34 games over the past two seasons for Kansas City and is viewed as an upgrade in run support and tackling consistency. He has two interceptions over the past two years but has been a reliable presence in the secondary. Mafe, who had two sacks last season in a rotational role with Seattle, recorded nine sacks two years ago and ranked among the league’s top edge rushers in pressures. The Bengals are banking on increased snaps translating to higher production. Cincinnati had been linked to defensive tackle John Franklin-Myers but pivoted after he agreed to terms with the Tennessee Titans. The Bengals are still expected to pursue help at linebacker and could look to add depth at edge rusher and slot corner as free agency continues. Meanwhile, the market for defensive end Trey Hendrickson remains uncertain. Reports indicate Hendrickson is seeking a deal worth about $30 million per year, but no team has met that price as he enters his age-32 season following surgery.
