Non-musical history for today: 1430 – Joan of Arc was captured at the Siege of Compiègne by troops from the Burgundian faction. I am fascinated with Ol' Joan. There are rumors that French garrison commander Guillaume de Flavy, through some questionable actions, could have caused her to be surrounded and captured. His career was never the same after her capture. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 23. Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza. Non-musical history for today: 1936 – Sada Abe was arrested after wandering the streets of Tokyo for days with her dead lover's severed genitals in her handbag. Her story soon became one of Japan's most notorious scandals. Um... yeah... on a happier note... Happy solar circumnavigational anniversary day to both my Mother-In-Law and my oldest nephew! Non-musical history for today: 1902 – Cuba gained independence from the United States. Tomás Estrada Palma became the country's first President. I don't know that I ever knew the US controlled Cuba. This came as a trade with Spain to end the Spanish-American War. We got Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines for $20M in 1898. Non-musical history for today: 1883 – Buffalo Bill's first Buffalo Bill's Wild West opened in Omaha, Nebraska. Did you know that Ol' Bill was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1872 for documented gallantry above and beyond the call of duty as an Army scout in the Indian Wars? Now you do! Non-musical history for today: 1980 – Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington, United States, killing 57 people and causing $3 billion in damage. I can't say for sure, but I think this was the first natural disaster that I ever heard of or, at least, paid attention to. I was nine at the time. 200 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways, and 185 miles of highway were destroyed. It remains the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in U.S. history. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 18. Non-musical history for today: 1954 – The United States Supreme Court handed down a unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, outlawing racial segregation in public schools. And here we are in 2025, and the Cheeto in Charge would like that to disappear. Non-musical history for today: 1568 – Mary, Queen of Scots, fled to England to seek protection from her first cousin, once removed, Queen Elizabeth I. Well, QEI saw Mary as a threat to her Crown and imprisoned her in several royal residences before being found "guilty" of conspiring to assassinate her cousin, and was beheaded.
