What we love directs the course of our lives. In a world filled with countless competing loves, the apostle John warns Christians not to set their hearts on things of the world that are passing away. The Father’s love, revealed in Jesus Christ, forgives wandering hearts and redirects us toward what lasts forever. Through his Word and sacraments, God continually fixes our eyes on Christ and leads us in the way of eternal life. This produces godly living in us, doing God’s will to his praise and glory.
