    Whether you have a pet or not the pet trade impacts us all not just those with a furry, feathered or scaled best friend. In this episode of Baffling Biology the fantastic Dr Jon Bielby unlocks the complex world of both illegal and legal animal trade. From our cuddly cats killing protected birds to the tiny terrapins that grew and were left in the local park, the potential for our pets to reek havoc on the natural world is illuminated. Not only is the intricacies related to getting a pet trade highlighted through his work but he has also investigated how different sizes of dog breeds can relate to their longevity (SPOILER: its an important thing to consider). With some of the preconceptions about crossbreed lifespan being brought into question. If fur covered creatures aren't your cup of tea don't worry Jon is also heavily interested in the well being of birds, reptiles and amphibians too, with some of his work looking into the dreaded chytrid fungus that has not only exploded across the globe but is mutating as well.
