If a stranger stopped you in the Walmart parking lot and asked what the driving force in your life is, what would you actually say?

David Graves opens with that and then runs through the answers he's collected over decades of ministry. Success. Family. Pleasure. Belonging. None of them wrong, exactly.

Paul gives his own answer in 2 Corinthians 5. Christ's love compels us. Graves digs into that word compels, which in Greek carries two things at once: something that drives you forward, and something that keeps you between the lines. He connects it to the inflatable bumpers in a bowling alley gutter and to what the early church called the walk unto death.

He closes with a 24-year-old working the register at a gas station in Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011, and the words he gave a reporter who asked him why.
