    2025/08/06
In this episode of BC Food News, host Jennifer English discusses an initiative by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF). Funded by a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor's Pathway Home Initiative, this program aims to provide training, credentials, and job placement to over 400 justice-involved adults. The NRAEF's Hospitality Opportunities for People Re-entering Society (HOPES) program is speculated to have an enhanced reach due to this grant, supporting communities such as Los Angeles, cities within Delaware, Boston and Worcester in Massachusetts, Cleveland in Ohio, Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, and Nashville in Tennessee. Proving its effectiveness, the HOPES program has served 1,200 individuals so far, with over 85% receiving occupational skills training and over 60% securing employment within the restaurant and hospitality sectors. The NRAEF collaborates with various state restaurant associations and community-based partners, working closely to provide pre- and post-release training, assist with employment placement, and overcome barriers to gain long-term job stability.

  • Black Restaurant Week Celebrates 10 Years With Return to Atlanta
    2025/08/05
The latest episode of BC Food News, hosted by Jennifer English, celebrates Black Restaurant Week's ninth year in Atlanta, with expanded support from local municipal bodies and Stella Artois. Running from August 3 to 17, this initiative shines a spotlight on Black-owned culinary businesses, offering community celebration and marketing support. In previous years, it has generated 75 million dollars in economic impact for the city. Despite the increasing challenges faced by restaurateurs, the initiative, founded in 2016, has supported over 5,000 chefs, caterers, food trucks, and restaurateurs nationwide. This year also sees the debut of the Bites & Birdies Golf Tournament to raise funds for underrepresented students in the culinary and business fields. The two-week-long celebration will host various events, including a dinner and skate night and curated meals across the city.

  • The Rise of Fine Chocolate: British Tastes Turn to Artisan Luxury
    2025/08/05
In the latest episode of BC Food News, host Jennifer English explores Britain's growing appreciation for fine chocolate and the rise of artisan luxury brands like Giuliana Pimenta Signature Chocolates. She discusses how consumer preferences are shifting from mass-produced sweets to chocolates that offer layers of flavour, complex textures, and a narrative of craftsmanship. Giuliana Pimenta, a Brazilian chocolatier, has made a significant impact in the UK market, earning four Great Taste Awards and establishing a devoted fan base in less than a year. The podcast illustrates the brand's focus on delivering a sensory-rich experience, blending flavor innovation with visual designs in their small-batch chocolates. Pimenta's brand aligns with a changing market in the UK, positioning chocolate as more than just a treat but rather an elevated, indulgent experience with a story to tell.
