One of the greatest shortcomings for the believer is spiritual amnesia. We often forget the ways in which God has shaped us and grown us as followers of Christ. While there's a litany of things that compete for our hearts, here in Deuteronomy 8, God implies that the prosperity of the world is a key contributor to our forgetfulness. But the solution is not the rejection of the blessings of God, but to obey Him through the our stewardship of His provisions.

God chose Israel not because they were great, but because He loved them and kept His covenant. Our identity is rooted in His grace, not our performance. When we remember His faithful love, we are called to live as people who belong to Him.

Soon after Moses reinstituted the Ten Commandments with the Israelites, he then issued the foundational truth of the Shema. It would be upon this core truth by which all other things would lean on. For us, especially in the times we are living in, we must understand that without the same solid foundation of truth, the rest of our worldview will crumble.

The Ten Commandments are not a checklist for earning God's favor but a response to His saving grace. When we remember who God is — our Redeemer, King, and faithful covenant God — our worship, relationships, and obedience begin to reflect His character.

Moses calls Israel to remember God's mighty works and recognize a life-changing truth: there is no God besides the Lord. He alone speaks, saves, and reigns over all. As we remember who God is and what He has done, we are called to trust Him fully, worship Him exclusively, and obey Him wholeheartedly.

Deuteronomy 4 takes place after the Israelites have wandered in the Wilderness for 40 years as a result of their unbelief. All of the men of that generation have passed away, and Moses is now preparing the next generation to enter the Promised Land. Moses calls on God’s people to remember God’s commandments, that they may live. Likewise, Jesus calls to remember what He has commanded us, specifically the Greatest Commandment and the Great Commission, that we might live out our new life in Christ.

Deuteronomy highlights this well known story in the Bible of Israel's struggle on the edge of the Promised Land to reveal to us not only our weakness and sin, but ultimately who God is in His grace and favor.

Israel stood at the edge of a new beginning, but before they could move forward, God called them to remember where they had been. From there God said, “You have stayed long enough at this mountain.” Sometimes the greatest danger is not rebellion, but becoming comfortable where God never intended us to remain. This passage challenges us to remember God’s past faithfulness while refusing to settle spiritually.
