The day got its start in the American state of Nebraska when a journalist named Julius Sterling Morton proposed that his fellow Nebraskans would plant trees to show appreciation for nature and the environment. The first Arbor Day was celebrated in 1872 and the idea grew from there. Just like other plants, trees are amazing providers of oxygen that keep the world going. Trees afford us many pleasures. In the spring, their buds let us know warmer weather is on the way. Their summer leaves provide ample shade on a hot day. Have you ever joyfully jumped into a pile of crisp colorful leaves in the fall? And in the winter, tree branches offer shelter to wildlife.
