Exhaustion forces a promise — and fear lingers beneath it. The danger now waits in hunger and time.
In The Odyssey, Book 12, Odysseus yields to his crew’s insistence on landing at Thrinacia but demands a safeguard: a solemn oath that none will harm the sacred cattle of Helios. The men swear, and the ship is moored near fresh water as they eat what remains of Circe’s provisions. Grief follows, and sleep overtakes them. In the night, Zeus unleashes a violent storm, hemming them in. At dawn, Odysseus repeats the warning — there is still food aboard, and the cattle belong to a god who sees and hears all.
This passage tightens the noose: restraint is sworn, the storm closes in, and time itself becomes the enemy.
