The story follows four friends on an off-season hiking trip in the remote Austrian Alps. Their adventure turns terrifying when they follow mysterious human footprints into the wilderness, leading to a violent encounter with a circling pack of wolves. The next morning, they discover the snow scattered with mutilated wolf carcasses and unnaturally large, human-shaped tracks, hinting at a far greater, unknown threat. Their escape ends abruptly when they encounter a towering, frostbitten creature with antlers, which brutally kills one of the group. Though rescued by mountain patrol investigating the deceased wolves, the narrator’s account of the monster is dismissed as trauma-induced delusion, and he is subsequently convicted for illegal wolf killing based on the evidence at the camp.
