The Muslims once built the greatest libraries in the world. Today, our manuscripts sit in cities like Berlin and Princeton, catalogued by orientalists who've spent years learning our language while we scroll past our own history. In this lecture, Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan walks through how the salaf approached books, why Yusuf ibn Tashfin crossed the sea at ninety years old to rescue Andalus, and why one Muslim ruler was humiliated into receiving letters from his enemy dictating the terms of his own defeat.

The argument is simple and uncomfortable: if you don't read, your understanding of history will be whatever someone else decided to teach you such as Henry VIII and his wives, the Romans, the Tudors. Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan begins his explanation of Kitab al-Fitan from Sahih al-Bukhari, opening with the linguistic origin of the word fitnah drawn from placing gold into fire so its purity is separated from its impurities. He covers Allah's warning that trials will not strike only the wrongdoers, the severity of pointing a weapon at a Muslim, and the obligation of listening to the Muslim ruler including the four strict conditions the scholars require before rising against him.

Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan then explains the hadith that "the one sitting is better than the one standing" during fitnah, the ruling on two Muslims meeting with their swords, and the positions of the Sahabah who withheld their hands during the fitnas of Ali and Mu'awiyah.

Deviation occurs when people harbour bad intentions (Niyyah) or possess a flawed understanding (Fahm) of text (Qur'an and Sunnah), or both.

In this episode of the explanation of 'Ad Daa wad Dawaa' (The Disease and the Cure) by Imam Ibn al Qayyim, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan unveils the mistakes and corruption in the beliefs of sects such as the Jabriyyah, the Khawaarij, and the Murji'ah.

Furthermore, he explains the statements of Imam Ibn al Qayyim on various groups deceived by wishful thinking and those who misinterpret the verses of the Qur'an. Among them are people who erroneously believe that their love for righteous servants of Allah alone guarantees salvation on the Day of Judgment. Another faction comprises those who selectively adhere to verses emphasising Allah's mercy while disregarding the verses that mention Allah's anger and warnings, thereby using them to justify their sinful behaviour and fulfil their desires.

Ustadh also compares their mistakes in 'Aqeedah with the beliefs of Ahl as-Sunnah and discusses the right approach to the Qur'an and hadiths to avoid going astray.
