Islam did not invent slavery — it inherited a world where it was universal. But it became the first system to actively dismantle it.
*How?*
1. *Closed the door*: The Qur’an limited sources of slavery to war captives only, then banned new enslavement of free people. No kidnapping, no debt slavery.
2. *Opened every exit*: Freeing a slave is called the best charity. It’s the required atonement for sins like breaking oaths and accidental killing. The Prophet ﷺ said, _“Whoever frees a Muslim slave, Allah will free him from the Fire.”_
3. *Mandated dignity*: _“Feed them from what you eat, clothe them from what you wear”_ — Hadith. Slaves could marry, own property, testify in court, and buy their freedom.
4. *The goal was abolition*: By making freedom a constant act of worship, Islam set society on a path to end slavery entirely. Within 100 years, entire regions had no slaves because manumission was so common.
*Bottom line:* The Qur’an asks, _“What will make you know what the steep path is? It is freeing a slave.”_ — 90:12-13.
True Islamic teaching pushes toward freedom, not bondage. Any slavery today in the name of Islam contradicts the Prophet’s final sermon: _“Your slaves are your brothers. Allah has put them under you.”_
