When host Mama Rae started watching The Carman Family Deaths on Netflix, she expected yet another tragic case where an autistic person was mistreated and unheard. But the deeper she looked, the more she realized this case belonged in a different conversation:

💛 What happens when autistic support disappears?

This episode examines the unsolved deaths in the Carman family — including the disappearance of Linda Carman at sea and the unsolved murder of her father, John Chakalos — through the lens of autism support, family conflict, and system failures.

Nathan Carman was diagnosed autistic and ultimately became the suspect in both deaths. He pled not guilty, and before a jury could decide the truth, he died in jail in 2023. All charges were dismissed. There is no legal resolution.

This episode isn’t about guilt or innocence.

It’s about what happens in the space where support systems fail.

📌 Topics Covered:

  • Autism misconceptions in criminal investigations
  • The danger of stereotypes: “incapable” vs. “cold & calculated”
  • Why therapy and adult support matter as much as childhood intervention
  • How families are left with impossible choices when systems don’t help

If this story brings up difficult emotions, please see the crisis resources below.

No autistic person should ever have to walk through the world alone.
