概要
Welcome back to the Basin and Towel podcast! I’m your host, Pastor Chris Cahill. I live in Lodi, Ohio, where last year I retired from 45 years of pastoral ministry in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. In my retirement I’ve been doing some substitute preaching in other churches - this episode is the sermon I preached on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Malvern, Ohio.
The church calendar designates January 6 as the day to remember that after Jesus was born, the Wise Men came to worship him and give Him precious gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh - because they learned and believed that the Babe of Bethlehem was in fact the true King of Israel. The church calendar also says that the very next Sunday (January 11 this year) is the day for us to remember that when Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River as a grownup, the Holy Spirit came in the form of a dove and landed on Him, while God the Father’s voice proclaimed from heaven “This is my Beloved Son!” This was the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry - but also, the anchor point of our salvation.
This week’s readings from God’s word were Isaiah 42:1-9, Romans 6:1-11, and Matthew 3:13-17
