Today we come to a chapter that is both painfully human and profoundly important. It is a chapter built around one of the stupidest decisions ever made by a king of Israel.

And let’s be honest: We’ve all done it. We all know others who have done it. There are no exceptions. All of us, at one time or another, have made stupid decisions.

But 2 Chronicles 10 introduces us to a stupid decision of a different kind, one that most people don’t even know exists, and one that changed the course of Israel’s history.

Stupid because the decision made in this chapter describes the division of the kingdom of Judah from the majority of Israel.

It is the moment the united kingdom becomes a divided kingdom. It is the moment Rehoboam steps onto the stage. And it is the moment a foolish choice fractures a nation.

But there’s another theme woven through Chronicles, a theme you’ve heard me mention again and again:

The relationship of each king to the Temple reveals the condition of his heart. That’s why the chronicler keeps bringing us back to the Temple: Its worship, its priests, its sacrifices, its maintenance, its neglect, and its restoration. Because the Temple is the spiritual barometer of the nation, and the king’s attitude toward the Temple is the spiritual barometer of the king.

So, with that in mind, let’s turn now to 2 Chronicles 10 and examine the decision that split a kingdom — and the lessons it still teaches us today.
