As casualty reports from Gettysburg poured in, President Abraham Lincoln wrestled with one haunting question:
How could he tell thousands of grieving families their loved ones had not died in vain?
More than 51,000 American casualties in the bloodiest battle in the nation’s history.
Preparing for his Gettysburg cemetery dedication speech, Lincoln turned to the Declaration of Independence, recognizing that the Civil War was testing whether a nation founded on God-given rights could survive.
At Gettysburg, he reminded Americans that the fallen had already consecrated the battlefield through their sacrifice. The responsibility now belonged to the living.
His warning still echoes today: freedom is never inherited automatically. Freedom is entrusted to ordinary men and women who must decide, in every generation, whether they will prove worthy of those who came before them.
That was America’s unfinished work at Gettysburg. It remains America’s unfinished work today.
