In this Wednesday night Bible study from 1 Kings 12, we examine the division of Israel under Rehoboam and the devastating consequences of pride, fear, and rejecting godly counsel.

After Solomon’s death, his son Rehoboam became king. The people asked him to lighten the heavy burdens that Solomon had placed upon them. Rehoboam first consulted the older men who had advised his father. They encouraged him to serve the people, speak kindly to them, and respond with humility.

Instead of accepting their wise counsel, Rehoboam turned to the younger men with whom he had grown up. Their advice appealed to his pride. They encouraged him to answer harshly and increase the people’s burdens. Rehoboam chose the counsel that made him appear stronger rather than the counsel that reflected wisdom, compassion, and servant leadership.

His arrogant response divided the kingdom. Ten tribes rejected the house of David and followed Jeroboam, while Rehoboam retained authority over Judah and Benjamin. One proud decision produced consequences that affected generations.

The account reminds us that seeking advice is not enough. We must be willing to receive wise, biblical counsel, especially when it challenges our preferences. Pride often searches for someone who will approve what we have already decided to do.

Although the division of the kingdom fulfilled what God had previously declared, Rehoboam remained responsible for his choices. God’s foreknowledge and sovereignty do not remove human responsibility.

When Rehoboam prepared to fight against the northern tribes, God commanded him not to go to war against his brethren. This time, Rehoboam obeyed. His obedience prevented further bloodshed and demonstrates that even after a serious failure, the right response is to submit to God’s Word.

Jeroboam then allowed fear to control his decisions. He worried that if the people continued worshiping in Jerusalem, their loyalty would return to Rehoboam. Instead of trusting God, he created an alternative system of worship.

Jeroboam made golden calves, established unauthorized places of worship, appointed priests who were not of the tribe of Levi, and devised religious observances from his own heart. His false worship was convenient and politically useful, but it was contrary to God’s commands and became a snare to Israel.

This chapter presents two leaders with similar heart problems. Rehoboam was ruled by pride, and Jeroboam was ruled by fear. Both rejected God’s wisdom, and both harmed the people they were responsible to lead.

The lesson challenges us to examine whose counsel we follow, whether pride or fear is controlling our decisions, and whether our worship and service are directed by Scripture or by personal preference.
